Where do I begin in my review of “Morning Mist of Blood” by Eric Wilder? I am not quite sure… Based upon the book’s description I think I was expecting a western or something along those lines. I wondered if Eric Wilder might be an up and coming author with a Louis L’Amour writing style. Instead what I got was a mixture of Clive Cussler meets Edward Stratemeyer, creator of “The Hardy Boys” which is penned under Franklin W. Dixon, meets Lou Cameron, creator of “The Longarm” books penned under Tabor Evans which is an adult western series. While I am not saying that this is a bad thing I will say that “Morning Mist of Blood” is written by a man and the male perspective definitely comes across in both his writing style and in the numerous adult/mature parts of the book.

The premise of “Morning Mist of Blood” is this: Buck McDivit, the book’s main character is hired by a wealthy rancher to investigate a murder, oil and cattle theft as well as a neighboring pagan commune that is populated only by women…

As far as the author, I would say that Wilder possesses good writing skills. His story is easy to read, easy to follow and for the most part it flowed smoothly. Wilder is able to describe the book’s characters and situations clearly and he does not lose track of his storyline. However, at times, I did feel he became overly verbose especially when writing about things like designer clothes, hair styles or fashion. “Morning Mist of Blood” feels like a western, is written with “good ol’ boy” lingo consequently some of those overly detailed passages felt out of place. I also noticed some character dialogue redundancy but for the most part “Morning Mist of Blood” was an enjoyable read.

In summary I give “Morning Mist of Blood” a three star Amazon rating. While it’s not a “keep you on the edge of your seat” read it’s definitely a “fun” read. Just make sure if you’re giving it as a gift that the recipient is over eighteen…
