“Let us go Back in Time…Through the miracle of pictures.  Back, Back in time…before the age of lusty oil monopolies. al-Qaeda or pocket TV’s.”  So begins Robert C. Valentine’s book about World War II, “A Toast for You & Me, America’s Participation, Sacrifice and Victory, Vol. 2”  Valentine’s book has been a long time in the works as it states in the Introduction that he began in 1982.  His interpretation of the events of the era is based on “official documents, radio reports, published works – both official and unofficial, manuscripts, letters, films (both in color and black and white), and personal interviews.”

I enjoyed supplementing my existing knowledge of World War II with the narrative provided in Valentine’s book.  I feel like I learned a lot through the stories and the information that was presented.  The writing was intriguing, interesting, and definitely held my attention.

The main strength of “A Toast For You & Me, America’s Participation, Sacrifice and Victory, Vol. 2” for me was in the photography.  I loved looking at the photographs from the World War II time period.  Things have changed so much since that era which really doesn’t seem all that long ago.   I especially liked the old pictures of the advertisements and posters.

At the end of the book there is a section entitled, “Time Capsule Dates of the Second World War” in which “important events of Jan-Dec 1942 are highlighted, as well as verses of long-lost information pertaining to the United States.”  There are a lot of interesting facts presented in this timeline.

I recommend “A Toast For You & Me, America’s Participation, Sacrifice and Victory, Vol. 2,” to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of our country, most particularly about the time period of the Second World War.  This book is a wonderful supplement and refresher to the facts that we all learned in history class so long ago.
