Shadow Waits

I must admit that in the opening pages of the book when I read the word “vampire” I groaned thinking yet another vampire book?  Ever since the Twilight series of books it seems that there are vampire books coming out left and right.  However, my skepticism at yet another vampire book quickly changed to intrigue as I realized that this one was quite different from the others that I had read.

The Prologue of the book begins with snippets from various news reporters reporting live from the war in Kuwait.  There are mentions of a “vampire virus” which has been inflicted on our overseas troops and how a group of stricken veterans has asked for protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The scene then turns to an armed robbery at the RexCo drugstore where Pharmacist Michael MacDonald is on duty along with his technician Mary.  Michael and Mary were both overseas in Kuwait during the war.  However, until the robbery when Mary was shot and quickly recovered, Michael had not known that she had been infected with the vampire virus.  When this information is brought out in the news report on the robbery, Mary goes into hiding with Michael assisting her.  The book then alternates between current events and back when Michael was serving in Kuwait.

“Shadow Waits” is a book that will draw you in straight from the beginning.  In one sitting I read over half of the 448 pages which meant for a late night, but it was definitely worth it.  I found the “vampire virus” to be very interesting and it made for a good story.  I think that anyone who likes military fiction will enjoy David Talon’s newest book.
