Unintended Consequences

What began as a seemingly normal day ended up to be one that would change Bill Shaner’s life forever.  On July 11, 1989, Shaner was overseeing a warehouse construction job when the work collapsed burying him underneath a pile of debris.  He says that  “The feeling of struggle was fleeting and I succumbed to the thought that my death was inevitable.  With that, everything became dark and I was enveloped by a bright white light.  It was the most secure, beautiful feeling I’ve ever experienced.  I felt warm.  I didn’t hurt any longer.  I was at peace and almost eager to head toward a place where I could experience this euphoria.  “ (p.7)  As he felt himself begin to leave his body he heard his name being shouted out and recognized it as his brother searching for him.  Shaner ended up being pulled out of the rubble but had a long road ahead of him as he was told that there was a 99% chance that he would never walk again.  However, he was determined to beat those odds.

Shaner’s near death experience profoundly changed his life and awakened his spiritual side.  In “Unintended Consequences” he shares with us his resulting discoveries in hopes that by relaying what he learned he will be able to assist us in our own spiritual journey and help us to lead more fulfilling lives. 

I think that anyone could benefit from the teachings and information that Shaner presents in this book.  Everything is written in a straight-forward, interesting, and readable manner.  The book will cause you to reflect on your own life and hopefully to make a few changes to live your life for the better.  I found “Unintended Consequences” to be a very positive, encouraging book and am inspired to incorporate some of Shaner’s lessons into my daily life.  Shaner is definitely a remarkable man who has been through a lot and I commend him for taking what could have been a devastatingly negative experience and turning it into one of growth and enlightenment.
