The first few chapters in JD Seamus’ novel “Last Call,” introduce the reader to many different people.  My fears of having to keep everyone straight were quickly extinguished when all of the characters neatly came together not far into the book.  The main setting that unites them all is a Manhattan bar, Jimmie’s bar.  Jimmie’s is patronized by cops, career woman, Mafioso, etc.  The setting kind of has a Cheers bar feel to it, a place “where everybody knows your name.”

The main focus of the story is on Jimmie, the bar owner.  He has a wife with multiple sclerosis and a mentally disabled daughter, both of whom are currently living in Florida.  With his wife and daughter out-of-state, his bar patrons have become like a second family to him.  His regulars understand the reasons for his shady dealings in smuggling and his offshore bank accounts.  Jimmie, however, has his own illness that he is dealing with, and a lawyer who is a scam artist and trying to take advantage of him.  His tight-knit group of friends promises to help him regain what was his, which turns out to be harder than they anticipate.

“Last Call” is a fast-paced, fun read.  The characters are all extremely memorable and very well developed.  I enjoyed how the author brought all of the main players together and liked seeing how their relationships grew.  The strength of the bond of friendship between them is what sets the direction and tone of the book.  The writing is humorous, yet heartwarming at the same time.  Seamus’ novel is one that grabs you right away in the opening pages and moves along steadily, holding your attention until the end.  I truly enjoyed Seamus’ writing style and I am sure we will be seeing many more successful novels from this talented writer in the coming years.
