reviewsNibble & Kuhn
David Schmahmann If you had any respect for lawyers, this book will without doubt reduce your reverence. Nibble & Kuhn, a large Boston law firm, is out to enhance its already self aggrandizing reputation by accepting more high profile cases and moving to a new opulent location. The self-important partners rule with an unyielding control, creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the overworked associates whose main responsibility is to bill, bill, bill! Derek Dover has been paying his dues for years as a young overworked associate and is now up for partnership. He is assigned by supercilious partner Tony Olwine to a high visibility environmental lawsuit, initiated by inept partner Margaret Kelly, who now by Peter Principle is advancing to a judgeship. Kelly has claimed that a large industrial company is polluting by runoff a swimming pond nearby the plant. Derek is left to prove accusations that seven young boys have cancer as a result of this toxic waste. As Derek proceeds, he finds that the case has no credibility. The case was obviously contrived in attempt to win the big bucks and gain notoriety for the firm. With little evidence and dreadful expert witnesses, he is left to prosecute rapidly without much help or funding. He enlists the aid of beautiful Maria Parma, a new associate with whom he is romantically linked. Their complicated relationship creates tension in the work environment, and they soon discover that they are presented with a no-win personal relationship as well as a no-win suit. “Nibble & Kuhn” by David Schmahmann is a satirical look at corporate law firms replete with arrogant partners, overworked associates and trumped up lawsuits. No wonder there are so many nasty lawyer jokes abound! It is a good page turner that evokes both laughter and anger.
