The title of the book, “On My Own Now: Straight Talk from the Proverbs for Young Christian Women who Want to Remain Pure, Debt-free and Regret-free” pretty much says it all.  Author Donna Lee Schillinger takes certain verses from Proverbs and applies the words written long ago to situations relevant to young people today.  The book is geared toward Christian women in their late teens and early twenties who are just starting out on their own.  The author states that the reason that she is writing the book is because she wants you, the reader, to be wise.  She says that, “The thought that maybe something in these pages could help you better understand the wisdom of the Proverbs, and perhaps choose to apply them and avoid making some of the stupid mistakes that are usual and customary for young women today is what motivates me to write a guide for you.” (p. 7)

What follows is a straightforward handbook that I feel would be helpful for any young Christian woman to read.  The writing has a very “young” feel to it and is definitely both interesting and enjoyable to read.  The examples given throughout the book are vividly clear and easily imaginable.  Schillinger’s thought process is extremely creative and this especially shines through in her choices of the names of her subtitles within the chapters.  One title that I particularly enjoyed was, “I Was the Frog in the Frying Pan.”  I also really loved watching how the author was able to take a concept such as the frog in a frying pan, link it to a Proverb, and then intertwine that idea further yet with a modern day real-life situation.  It is this uniqueness that makes this book thoroughly readable and less “lecture-ish” than similar books within the genre.

“On My Own Now: Straight Talk from the Proverbs for Young Christian Women who Want to Remain Pure, Debt-free and Regret-free” is small in size but the advice that it contains packs a big punch.  I would recommend this book to any young Christian woman to assist in making her life path a little clearer.
