I am a fan of chick lit and it’s a double present for me when I get a young adult chick lit.

“Abby and Jules,” written by Lia Quince is the story of Abigail and Julie, who meet in their teens through unpredictable circumstances and develop a deep and enduring friendship.  However, as they grow into women of the world, they face the challenge of keeping their friendship intact, all the while living their lives as individuals with very specific goals.

The main focus of this story is definitely the story of the friendship between Abby and Jules.  The interesting twist and the backbone of the plotline is the huge cultural differences in which the girls meet.  In the first part of the book, the author focuses the writing on the extremely different background and lives both girls are living.  Yet, despite these differences, the girls are capable of finding their common thread and build a friendship that enhances their differences and highlights their points in common.

I thought this story was very refreshing and actually quite informative.  I knew very little about China, and author Quince does a good job of describing the cultural differences between the two girls.

As the girls cement their friendship, they are also living their lives and growing up.  This aspect of the book is a little more standard, but still is an interesting read.  The girls face the challenges that best friends must face at one point and the storyline managed to keep me interested in the fate of both of these girls.

The writing is okay.  Some of it was, at times, a little cliché, but overall the storyline was engaging and fun.

This was a very good chick lit and I can’t wait to read the follow up!!!!
