It’s an open secret that James Patterson no longer writes the books that are being marketed in his name. He is an institution by himself. But I like the Institution and there’s nothing like a James Patterson to thrillingly relax you after a busy day’s work. It’s read it, enjoy it, shut it and forget it type of novels.  This might be the 50th James Patterson novel I am reading- each Patterson novel may be following the steadfast formula….yet I enjoy and ravish each James Patterson novel.

Thus Detective Alex Cross novels used to follow a steadfast formula and it was something along these lines which I was expecting when I got my hands on “Alex Cross’s Trial.” But I was in for a surprise. We do not see Alex Cross the detective here.. but we are introduced to Alex Cross, the author, who has now written a historical- legal thriller by name ‘Trial’. The protagonist in the novel is attorney Ben Corbett, a lawyer who lived in the early decades of the 20th century. A humanist at heart, Corbett is deputed by President Theodore Roosevelt to enquire into the lynchings that happens in Corbett’s hometown Eudora. The Ku Klux Clan it seems has reemerged and President Roosevelt needs the help of Corbett to tackle the same. And when Corbett reaches Eudora the only person he can trust is Abraham Cross, the grand uncle to Alex Cross, the author. Would Corbett fulfill his job and how will Abraham Cross become a cult figure in the Cross family legacy? What follows is a good suspense fare; a good historical legal thriller that culminates in an exciting finish that sure would keep Patterson fans happy.

Patterson, for the first time enlists the help of a co- author in the Alex Cross series. Richard Dillalo does a fine job and I just can’t wait for “I, Alex Cross” that will hit the stands later this year.
