Fixing You: Back Pain

Rick Olderman

According to the back cover, Rick Olderman MSPT, CPT “is a sports and orthopedic physical therapist, personal trainer, and Pilates instructor.  He specializes in treating people with chronic pain, addressing root causes of pain rather than treating symptoms.  He also prescribes exercise programs for his clients with injuries to return to sports and work and enjoy a fuller, pain-free life.”  In his book, “Fixing You:  Back Pain” he presents the reader with exercises designed to fix the root causes of back pain.

The book begins with a section on “Mindful Healing” that focuses on visualization and verbalization and looks at the importance of the mind-body connection.  Olderman then goes on to present an anatomy lesson so that the reader is able to better understand the cause of his or her pain.  After that, he provides some tests which will help to pinpoint your individual problem.  Whether you have a flexion and extension issue, a rotation problem, or a pelvic issue, Olderman has the fix for you. The last section of the book focuses on corrective exercises complete with photo instructions.  If you need further assistance in execution, Olderman also has videos of the exercises on his website.

I found “Fixing You:  Back Pain:” to be a very informative book and like that Olderman’s approach is to solve the core issue and not just put a band-aid on the problem.  The writing is very straight-forward and the exercise instructions are clearly detailed and accompanied by helpful photographs to ensure that you have the correct positioning.    I think that anyone suffering from lower back pain should give this book a try.
