 “Portals to Europe ” by Kathy Noltze is a humorous account of Ms. Noltze’s travels through Britain , Germany , Austria , and Poland .  Ms. Noltze prefers to travel alone or with another companion rather than with a scheduled touring group.  Her belief is that with a group too much time is spent waiting and much of the reality of a country is missed by only visiting the truly touristy destinations.  In her example, many foreigners visit New York City , thinking they have discovered what America is all about, when in fact, most Americans would claim the life of a true urban dweller is nothing like their lives at all.

 In her quest to go “off the beaten path” Ms. Noltze humorously depicts her language barrier problems.   She presents many pictures of her travels with several examples of the rich European history.  But more than teaching about European history, Ms. Noltze conveys the message to the reader that independent travel can be a very enriching, educational, exciting way to see the world.  I don’t know if I am brave enough to travel independently in a foreign country, but I can understand its value. 

The book is a quick read with humorous anecdotes throughout.  Anyone traveling to this part of Europe would benefit from Ms. Noltze’s experiences.  Happy, safe travels!
