“Railroad 1869:  Along the Historic Union Pacific” is written by Eugene Arundel Miller who “is the youngest grandson of Arundel C. Hull one of the earliest photographers along the route of the transcontinental railroad.  Miller inherited Hull’s collection of photographs and with maps in hand he retraced the entire route of the Union Pacific.  Along the way he found countless stories of the builders and hangers-on, visited surviving towns and sites of long-forgotten ghost towns.” (back cover)

How exciting it must have been for Miller to retrace his grandfather’s footsteps and explore more of the history of this time period!  Through the historical information, stories, and photographs, Miller has created a wonderful book chronicling the railroad’s construction period.  I loved being transported back to times long ago through the great photography and I particularly enjoyed the excerpts from Arthur Ferguson’s diary and from The Frontier Dispatch (the newspaper on wheels).  Even my two young sons, who love trains, enjoyed the photography and spent a long time looking at each and every picture.  It was fun to paraphrase and tell them the stories behind each of the photographs.

I think that “Railroad 1869:  Along the Historic Union Pacific” by Eugene Arundel Miller would be of interest to anyone who is interested in railroads, trains, and history, most particularly to those living along the actual Union Pacific line.  Miller has done an excellent job of compiling the history of this railroad and creating a very interesting work to read.  I learned a lot from this book and know of a couple of people that this would make a great gift for!
