How Will I Know Where I'm Going, If I Don't Know Where I've Been?: A Genealogical Journey

Elizabeth Ruderman Miller
AuthorHouse (2009)
ISBN 9781449051037
Reviewed by Melissa Koltes for RebeccasReads (4/10)

The author immediately dives in and brings the reader along her adventure.  I was instantly intrigued in what she would discover about her ancestry.  Like many people Elizabeth Ruderman Miler wants to know where she came from.  This is not the lost person looking for an identity but just the curiosity that so many feel.

Being able to discover where her ancestors are from, what they did, who they married, if they had siblings, children, etc is the reason the author embarked on her journey to begin with.  I was amazed that she found out so much information just by finding an old passport.  It was both exhilarating and heartbreaking to read how they left everything they knew and loved to try and find a better life in America.  I cannot fathom leaving my loved ones and not knowing if I would ever see them again.

Miller proceeds to direct the reader to the various online research tools she used and gives suggestions as to how to do your own research.  For anyone trying to find their lineage and doesn’t know where to start these links are invaluable.    They are a terrific starting point.

The author tells of family that she has discovered through her research.  How wonderful to find family (even distant family) to add to the tree.  She also reminds the reader to not give up and don’t be discouraged when a door is shut.  Some people are content to not know their family but keep looking because there are many more that will welcome the opportunity to share what they know.
