An internal assault on the USA, targeting liberal politicians, draws Wisconsin Jr. Senator Jake Telemark into action as an assassin.  In his old army days he was a covert sniper on secret missions, the stress and guilt eventually causing a breakdown requiring hospitalization.  With the past now long behind him, he once again finds himself solicited by Dr. Isadore (Dora) Hathaway, daughter of revered past senator Frank Hathaway, to become embroiled in a seemingly implausible plot.

She convinces him that there is a group of 12 powerful men, known as the Bookkeepers, orchestrating a takeover of the country with the intent of establishing a theocratic oligarchy.  It sounds far fetched to Jake, but she presents a convincing argument.  People are mysteriously dying, the water in Colorado is poisoned,  and an assemblage of clandestine oppositionists is eliminated.

Convinced to join forces with this savvy, beautiful, brilliant woman, he sets out a path to right wrongs.  Jake finds himself exacting a crazy pleasure out of once again holding that rifle in his hands, orchestrating and controlling the situation.  It also doesn’t hurt to have a sexual attraction with Dora.

As a psychologist, Midden gives more than a glimpse into the psyches of his characters, although as an author, he doesn’t develop them as well as I would have hoped.  This is, however, a well written focused story but lacks the sub-plots that would make it a blockbuster hit.  It would, however, make a great movie.  Jerry Bruckheimer, pay attention!
