"Confessions of a Trauma Junkie" by Sherry Jones Mayo is an in-depth, real world, account of what the men and women of the Emergency Services  (ES) see, feel, and encounter on a day to day basis.  This is not one person’s story that gives a microscopic view of their world but rather a collection of stories from various people, playing various roles within the ES world; police, paramedics, EMTs, nurses, and doctors.  These are the people that often see the worst possible outcomes of a situation but come back and do it again with little or no thanks. 

The author warns, right off the bat, that this is not a politically correct book and things are said and done in a true to life, this is how it is, kind of way.  No punches are pulled, no sugar coating of the stories, just 100% honest insight to a life that most of us will never experience. 

Throughout the book, the reader is exposed to the nitty-gritty nature of what these amazing people have to endure; from the ridiculousness of some people, to the physically and emotionally abusive patients to dealing with death…the reader sees it all and it isn’t always pretty.

The stories within this book took me on such an emotional roller coaster but it gave me a sense of what they go through.  Some stories made me laugh, some made me cry and others just broke my heart.  The reader is allowed to know of the first death the author experienced on the job, the loss of children, family and coworkers but also lets you see the joy of camaraderie and the closeness that can only come from the experiences they have shared.

This is an extremely well written book.  The author uses the English language in such an elegant manner the reader is sitting right there in the story without being so inundated with words that the story loses its meaning.  The stories flow very nicely with just enough interjection from the author, to give background or explain terms to allow the reader to understand completely what is taking place.
As a non-ES individual, I now have even more respect for this line of work than I did before and thank each of them for what they do every day without hesitation.
