reviewsFugitive: A Novel
Phillip Margolin Phillip Margolin has been one of my favorite authors ever since my grandfather introduced me to his writing many, many years ago by giving me the novel “Gone, But Not Forgotten” to read. Margolin is a very consistent writer and I never have been disappointed with anything of his work that I have read. This newest book is no exception! In “Fugitive,” there is a familiar face in Amanda Jaffe, an attorney from two of Margolin’s previous works: “Wild Justice” and “Proof Positive.” I enjoy the Jaffe character and was happy to see her make yet another appearance in Margolin’s writing. In this installment Jaffe’s mission is to keep her client Charlie off of death row and to protect him from being killed. Charlie is a con artist who, while in prison, rescues a warden during a prison riot. However, soon he takes off to Africa in an attempt to escape charges of murder of a U.S. Congressman. After 12 years there though he finds himself in trouble with the dictator and escapes back to the U.S. to face his charges. There are many people out to get Marsh and Jaffe’s needs to protect him. “Fugitive” is a very fast-paced novel, full of action and excitement. It is a book that you will not want to set down until you are finished, a true page-turner. If you enjoy legal thrillers then you will love this book (and any one of his previous novels as well)! As always, I greatly look forward to reading Margolin’s next novel.
Reviewed by Narayan Radhakrishnan for RebeccasReads (5/09) Last year with “Executive Privilege,” Phillip Margolin presented a chilling scenario in which the US President proves to be a serial killer. Though I enjoyed the said work, for me Phillip Margolin will always be associated with the Amanda Jaffe novels. And so, it’s with great thrill and relief that I began reading “Fugitive.” Attorney Jaffe, the heroine of “Wild Justice”, and “Ties That Bind,” returns in stupendous form with “Fugitive.” Charlie Marsh is a media hero. Accused and sentenced to jail for a crime, he attained hero status when he rescued the prison warden from the clutches of an insane prisoner. Charlie sure capitalizes on his newfound status, and before you know it, he is a New Age Spiritual Guru, which is an avatar the ex-conman carries on with glee. But fate turns enemy and once again Charlie has to flee from the law. That was in 1997 and Amanda Jaffe and her father Frank were at the helm of the defense. Now the action shifts to 2009. Charlie is now a close confidant of a despotic African ruler, President Jean Claude Baptiste of Batanga. He is even more a confidant to one of the President’s wives. Things turn sour when the President hears about Charlie’s misdemeanors and soon Charlie is on the run back to America. And now Jaffe has her client back. Jaffe has a big case on her hands and she has to protect her client from the gallows, and to protect him from Baptiste and certain others who are hell-bent on seeing Charlie dead. Margolin sticks close to his winning formula with this one, and packs a knockout punch with “Fugitive.” Recommended, highly, highly recommended.
