Justice in June

The main character is an up and coming solo lawyer that has broken away from a large law firm after breaking off an engagement to one of the partners.  Her new love asks her to take on the case of a family friend and she becomes entangled in defending a suspected terrorist.

However, in order to defend him, she must find him.  The reader is thrown into the new justice system that has evolved since 9/11 and the passing of the Patriot Act.  She is stonewalled as suspected terrorists are not protected by the constitution the way non-terrorist are.  This is a main theme throughout the novel.

Mary is also the defense attorney for a seated judge being investigated for possible ties to drug cartels.  Many cases are dismissed that come through the courtroom of Mary’s client, yet she has no recollection of ever seeing these cases…who is setting her up and why.

Through expert sleuthing the young lawyer begins to form a theory and enact a plan to determine who is behind the mass dismissals.  With the help of her assistant and an old boyfriend, she hatches her plan.

The story is enjoyable if not a bit predictable.  There is a very good mix of character development and intriguing story line.  The love story is an undercurrent and is done beautifully.  It plays on the characters need to find that special someone without being sappy or overbearing.

This is a well written book that draws you into the characters lives.  I look forward to reading more novels featuring these characters.
