reviewsJukan-Do Karate
Joseph A. Leonard Although my knowledge and experience in the martial arts field is limited to a five-week Kung-fu class that I took a few years ago, I have always had an interest in the sport and that is why I chose to read “Jukan-Do Karate- Calisthenics For Martial Arts & Gymnasiums.” The book is written by Joseph A. Leonard who has over fifty years of martial arts experience. He hopes that the exercises included “in this Book will help to increase body Flexibility, Timing, Speed, Strength, Balance and Focus, for Martial Artist, Non Martial Artist, Youths and Senior Citizens.” (back cover) Each exercise in the book is explained through photographs and written instructions. I found the photos to be very easy to follow. Although some of the exercises were already familiar to me, I did learn some new variations of many of them. Even my two young children were able to do a majority of the exercises detailed in the book so it made for a great family exercise session. “Jukan-Do Karate- Calisthenics For Martial Arts & Gymnasiums” could have benefited from further editing as there were many spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. However, for the most part, Leonard’s book is a nice little exercise program to help get you up and moving whether you are a student of martial arts or just want to increase your activity level. There are exercises in the book that people of every age and skill level would be able to perform as they are written or by making slight modifications.
