Entanglement

Moments after closing the case of “The Green Monster,” Johnny Denovo’s next case presented itself.  A fire had ignited in his old mentor, Evan Chalmer’s office.  The fire completely destroyed everything in the man’s workplace.  How the fire had started was baffling to the detectives on the case.  Johnny knew there was a link to him as “just hours before the fire had started, he’d been sinking in Boston Harbor, unconscious, a boat burning only a few hundred yards away.  Fire and water.  Then, less than an hour later, a fire had engulfed a lonely academic office in Cambridge.  The linkage was unavoidable, even if it had been made subconsciously.  Metaphors worked that way.”  (p.6)

Denovo is clued in to the source of the fire when the word “Dodo” is burned into his girlfriend Mona’s morning newspaper.  He realizes that someone from his past is responsible; someone who has a device that he is able to use to start fires from distant locations.  Some things aren’t adding up though and Johnny needs to decipher what is going on and make sense of it.

Whenever I open a new Johnny Denovo mystery I know that I am in for an intellectually stimulating ride and “Entanglement” was no exception.  Filled with word plays and metaphors, Andrew Kent writes in such a unique manner that I really can’t even think of any other author’s style to compare him to.  Kent’s novels really make you think and solving the mystery on your own before all of the information is revealed is really a difficult task.  If you enjoy an intelligently written mystery, then I definitely recommend “Entanglement” along with Kent’s prior Denovo mysteries “Spam and Eggs” and “The Green Monster.”
