“Breaking Through Betrayal- And Recovering the Peace Within” is written by Holli Kenley, MA.  The first thing that I always look at when reading a self-help book is the “About the Author” section.  It is important to me to see what the author’s credentials are and to see if, in my mind, they are qualified to give advice on the topic at hand.  In this case, it says that the author is “a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California.  She holds a Masters Degree in Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling.” (p.165) This, coupled with a long work history in numerous areas (private practice, women’s shelter, etc.) and other special training makes me confident that she has experience in the area in which she writes.

In “Breaking Through Betrayal- And Recovering the Peace Within,” the author addresses the three different types of betrayal and then she presents a five step process to help aid the reader in  recovering from betrayal.  Kenley’s choice of the word “recovering” versus the word “recovery” was not without thought.  In Chapter Six, she gives the reason for this wording:   “…it is a verb and implies action.  Too often, we speak of our healing process as a thing- ‘recovery’- which implies it is a state we get to, pass through, and then leave.” (p. 71)

At the end of each chapter, Kenley presents related activities for the reader to go through.  I like this hands-on, interactive workbook style as I think that the reader gets so much more out of the book when they are asked to reflect and write down information.  As the author stated, the word recovering “implies action” and by taking the actions to complete the activities in the book you will greatly be helping the process.  I think that “Breaking Through Betrayal: And Recovering the Peace Within” will be of benefit to anyone who is suffering from the effects of betrayal.
