A Hint of Wicked

A young pregnant woman in 1800's England loses her husband at Waterloo and has to continue with her life. Sophie must raise her child and go on. She remarries her childhood friend Tristan after being a widow for seven years. Tristan is also raising a young child alone, after his young wife, Nancy, passes away in childbirth. Having settled into marriage of less than a year, they are both disconcerted by news of her late husband. His reappearance turns everything upside down as they try to seek some semblance of order to their lives. There are other forces are play to drive the three former friends apart and emotions and urges run rampant.

Ms. Haymore is very talented at conveying the feelings of each individual in the book. Her portrayal of Sophie's quandary is plainly shown in:

Sighing, she held her hands out toward him in a gesture of peace. ”I don't hate you, Garret. I am angry, though. Just as you are. Please don't be a bore. I'm not part of your army. I'm not someone you can lead about by the strings.”
“You were before.”
Her breath stalled in her throat. Had she been? It was true she was so in love with him, she’d have done anything he'd asked. And he'd been gone so often...first at Eton, then Cambridge, then Spain and Belgium. Whenever he'd come home, her sole aim was to please him.
The years I spent without you forced me to mature. I'm not exactly the woman you left. We cannot rebuild our lives if you persist in the assumption that I'm someone you can order about.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was sexy, romantic, had villains and good guys and the prerequisite chase scene. My favorite part of the book is the sexy interplay between Tristan and Sophie.  The author has a great sense of humor and flair with descriptions.  I will definitely buy her next book.
