A Circle of Souls

Preetham Grandhi
Sweetwater Books (2010)
ISBN 978159954365

Reviewed by Kam Aures for Rebecca’s Reads (12/10)

“A Circle of Souls” by Preetham Grandhi begins with the image of a slaaf walking along the shoreline of Willow Lake, bringing back prey for his Master in hopes to please him.  From this Prologue we jump to the first chapter where the scene switches to two young girls discussing their after school plans.  One of the girls decides to take the long way home and climbs through Mr. Deed’s fence to walk around Willow Lake.  That girl is never seen alive again.

Meanwhile, a seven-year-old girl named Naya is admitted to the hospital due to the horrible nightmares that she has been having.  In a discussion of a particular nightmare one day, Naya draws on paper what she saw in her head.  One of the visuals that she draws for the doctor mimics the current news headlines of the day, which she has not seen, regarding the murdered girl.  It is these connections which makes “A Circle of Souls” a book that will hold your attention captive from beginning to end.

Grandhi’s writing is very fast paced and the novel just flies by.  The book is made up of seventy-six short chapters which made the read very enjoyable.  This short chapter format fit very well with the plot. The story flowed nicely and was filled with suspense and mystery.  The characters were well-developed, especially that of Naya.  “A Circle of Souls” is Grandhi’s first novel and I look forward to reading much more from this talented new author in the future.
