Ex-FBI agent Jack Davis has been sidelined because of a mysterious tic disorder hampering his job performance.  He is also haunted by the murder of his son by a sex offender and the drug related death of his daughter.   Needless to say his marriage also fell apart.  Living in a rented house, he finds himself at the mercy of his landlady’s young niece, Lucy, a former cop who has strayed from the right side of the law but insists on being his unwelcome assistant.

Down on his luck, Davis is recruited to accept a job as a security officer at The Harper Institute of the Mind, a facility doing innovative brain research linking psychological treatment with dream manipulation and analysis.  With a pending lawsuit hanging over the head of CEO Milo Harper, subjects dying, antagonistic researchers unwilling to cooperate, a dogged reporter, and an old girlfriend, Davis has his hands full, not to mention his uncontrollable muscle spasms.  To further complicate matters, one of the deaths of a research participant personally implicates Davis, dredging up many personal haunting memories.  With the cops and FBI on his tail as well, he must prove himself innocent as well as investigate the link behind these dream related deaths.

Jack Davis is a protagonist who commands not only the sympathy but also the respect of the reader in this extremely well written, fast-paced mystery.  "The Dead Man" by Joel Goldman is filled with layers of plots, fully developed characters, and a constantly moving plot making it very difficult to put down.  I would recommend this to any mystery buff looking for an intelligent and engrossing well written novel.
