Social worker Claire Conover was at work one morning when she got a call that every social worker dreads, one of her young clients was dead.  Two-year-old Michael Hennessy had been killed and all fingers were pointing towards his mother Ashley.  Claire was the social worker on the case and had been the one to allow Michael to return to his mother’s custody.  Ashley had been a drug addict, but when Michael was originally taken from her and placed in foster care, she had turned her life around.  All of her drug screens since being reunited with her son had been clean.  Claire thought that Ashley was going to be one of the ones who made it.  So, why was Michael dead?  What happened?  Claire does not believe that Ashley did it and sets out to find out what really happened to little Michael.  Was there something she missed in her original investigation into the family?

In Margaret Fenton’s background information it is stated that she has a Masters in Social Work.  Her own experience in the field provides for an accurate and intelligent look at how the process works.  I enjoyed the look into the system even though in this case the circumstances were not very pleasant as they centered on the death of a young child.

Fenton has penned a very gripping and fast-paced novel.  I recommend “Little Lamb Lost” to anyone who enjoys mysteries and/or to anyone who wants to take a look inside the field of social work.  I found the book to be a very impressive debut.  The mystery is well-written and I would love to see more from Fenton in the future.
