The Dung Beetle Manager

Scott W. Dunlap
Outskirts Press (2009)

ISBN 9781432744168
Reviewed by Melissa Koltes for RebeccasReads (3/10)

This is a book like none other I have ever read.  In fact, I’m not even sure which genre it best belongs in (neither is the author); autobiography, management, humor…it runs the gamut of options.  But the one thing that is certain is this is a new take on management and the workplace.

From the very beginning of this book you know you are reading something unique.  The author does not mince words and saying he is not politically correct is an understatement.  Dunlap is blunt with the many terms that are used and he does not apologize for it.  In fact, he revels in his directness.

The title is rather self explanatory but let me elaborate a bit.  This is a book that compares the various species of dung beetles to management styles.  There are rollers, tunnelers, etc .,and how each plays their role in how the workplace is handled.  The author explains that each of worker is guilty of causing others to play various roles, sometimes without even realizing it.  The stories that compliment these comparisons are so funny that at times I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard; hysterical stories that are so out there they have to be true.

Anyone that has ever been in the workforce will appreciate the light heartedness of this book but if you are easily offended by bluntness and need everything to be politically correct, you will be offended by some of this book.  If you are not…this is a must read!
