Four years back I read an impressive debut novel titled “Proof Evident”. It was an enriching novel, and as a lawyer myself, I found the arguments raised, points discussed succinct and thought provoking. I recommended the said book to my students of law and popular culture in this part of the world.

However, the author John Dicke remained silent for the past four years. I had just about relegated Dicke to the status of a ‘one book wonder’; when out of the blue came this book “Malicious Deceit”. There was no pre-publication raves, no publicity, no hoardings and over the top advertisements….but just a simple, personal letter announcing the publication of a new book. And I just had to read it. And the fifteen odd days I had to wait was a real pain….pain of frustration and finally when on day 15, when “Malicious Deceit” arrived; boy-oh-boy I was a nervous wreck. I dived into the work straightaway and finished reading the same within the next 3 days. And here is my verdict: “Malicious Deceit” is not as good as “Proof Evident”…..it's far, far better.

And yes,  Jack Maine, the crusading lawyer introduced in “Proof Evident”, makes a fabulous return in this novel. This time round its not the life of a single individual that’s on the line…but the life of a whole nation. Al- Qaeda has spread its wings to United States and disillusioned and disfranchised Americans are joining force with this evil presence. Terror is slowly and steadily invading the homes of America. And the best man to put an end to it is President Samuel Folsom? But has Folsom, the stuff in him to take the stern, tough, correct and effective decision at the appropriate time. And will the good people of United States get the justice they truly deserve. And its upto Jack Maine and his associates to do the needful.

The book was an exploding page-turner and the scary thing is that the plot delineated might be probably true. Its difficult to believe that this is fiction. Jack Maine and the way he conducts himself both as a person and as a professional reminded me of Tom Clancy’s series protagonist Jack Ryan. The intensity and the sharp sensitivity is common in both protagonists.

I enjoyed the work very much; and as lawyer I would recommend this as a must read for lawyers and law students. And, one thing I am sure- I have one less book to include in my law and popular culture curriculum for 2011.
