I have not read a Mary Jane Clark book in some time and was excited to see what appears to be a new series from The New York Times bestselling author.  This current title, “To Have and to Kill” is subtitled “A Wedding Cake Mystery” which to me is implying that there will be more to come with this particular theme.

One of the main characters, Piper, is a struggling actress who moves back home to help her mother out at her bakery.  Her mother is having health issues and doesn’t want to take on as heavy as a workload as she formerly did, so when Piper’s friend, also an actress, needs a wedding cake, Piper agrees to step in and make it.  Her friend’s wedding is not without controversy though as it appears that someone is trying to halt the wedding and their method to do so is murder.

One of my interests is cooking/baking and I enjoyed the passages in the book that related to the baking and wedding cake decorating theme.  I almost wish there was a little more of it in the book though.  At the end, Clark includes a recipe for “Piper’s Simple Buttercream Frosting” which I have already made to top some cupcakes and it is delicious!

I enjoyed “To Have and to Kill” and meeting all of the characters which I am sure I will see again in Clark’s future novels.  Clark’s novel was full of suspense and had many twists and turns.  I look forward to reading more books in the series and trying more of the recipes that will hopefully be included at the end of each book!
