Semisweet: A Maggie and Odessa Mystery

Reviewed by Kam Aures for Rebecca’s Reads (02/11)

“Semisweet,” the latest installment in the Maggie and Odessa series, begins with Odessa being held at knifepoint in her restaurant by Horace Fouke, a soon-to-be divorced exterminator.  After she escapes this harrowing ordeal, she receives a call from Maggie and gets drawn into the next mystery.  Maggie is “planning” a wedding for Eloise Verde at the request of Mrs. Thea Verde.  The real reason that Maggie, who is not a wedding planner, is “planning” the wedding is because Mrs. Verde wants Maggie to stop the wedding.  If she is not able to stop the wedding, then Mrs. Verde is going to get rid of Eloise’s fiancé in her own manner.  Odessa is drawn into the wedding planning affair and also is still terrorized by Horace Fouke as he has been released on bail.

I enjoy Maggie and Odessa mysteries and “Semisweet” was no exception.  The storyline is entertaining and the book was a fun read.  I really think that Jill Brock’s books could be right up there with other great authors in this genre if it wasn’t for one thing:  editing.  Unfortunately, “Semisweet” is plagued with numerous misspellings and other errors which greatly take away from the flow of the book.

Without these errors, “Semisweet” would be an excellent book.  Brock is a very creative author who has wonderful ideas and is able to craft engaging, fun mysteries.  Her Maggie and Odessa books to me are reminiscent of the Stephanie Plum series of books by Janet Evanovich with crazy, zany lead characters encountering humorous situations.  I hope to see more from this author in the future, but sincerely hope that the finished products are proofread more thoroughly.
