Rickey Bray, the author of “Rendezvous Rock” has a very interesting back story.  According to the back cover he “…became a writer after a series of personal tragedies.   Following a car accident involving a drunk driver and the death of his wife and two children, he turned to drugs for consolation, which eventually resulted in twelve years of incarceration, a life-altering experience that resulted in the start of his prolific writing career and this debut novel.”  This personal information alone about the author piqued my interest in reading his book.

As one of the main characters in the book, Eric, is on vacation in the mountains, he meets a very different girl named Susan and is immediately drawn to her, but something about her is unusual.  From here, Bray transports us to a world filled with adventure and fantasy.   One thing that I love above his writing is his descriptive detail.  He writes in a way that you can vividly picture in your mind everything that is taking place.  Here is an example, “Susan ambled lightheartedly down to the lakeside.  Having stopped off in the tiny bathroom to exchange the gown for a simple summer dress, she remained barefooted as she strolled the shore’s damp edge, enjoying the earthy feel of wet clay mixed with silt as it squished between her toes.” (p.30)   I really enjoy imagery like this as I could almost feel the earth squishing between my own toes when reading the book.

Bray’s work is very imaginative and the book flows nicely.  The author has a unique writing style that was refreshing to read.  I enjoyed this unusual trip to a mysterious world and think that if you enjoy fantasy, romance, and adventure that you will enjoy reading “Rendezvous Rock.”
