Death of a Witch

M.C. Beaton
Grand Central Publishing (2009)
ISBN 9780446196130
Reviewed by Enid Grabiner for Rebecca's Reads (6/09)

This is my first introduction to detective Hamish Macbeth,  police constable in a small village in the Scottish Highlands, who is the recurring character in prolific M.C. Beaton’s  mystery series. He is not an entirely likeable or tolerant person and has an especially hard time committing to women, who for some reason seem to be constantly attracted to him.  He is however devoted to his beloved dog and wild cat.

In “Death of a Witch”, Hamish returns from an unsatisfying holiday in Spain, only to discover that the village is consumed with gossip over the activities of enigmatic newcomer, Catriona Beldame. Is she a witch that is charming the men in the village, enraging their women?  Does she cast magical spells and dispense potions to enhance their sexuality? Is that what has them lining up at her door?

As Hamish tries to discover the truth, he goes to Catriona’s cottage only to find her dead, naked body on the bed. She has a slashed throat and stab wounds to the chest. As he reports the murder to police headquarters, her house suddenly goes up in flames.  But why?  Who is trying to destroy evidence?  Jealous men?  Angry wives? The ensuing investigation seems to initiate even more murders of neighboring women.  Secrets that were once behind closed doors start to come to light, despite the embarrassment of some of the villagers.

Aided by Lesley, a forensic expert brought in to assist in the inquiry,  Elspeth, an old friend and reporter, and Priscilla, elegant daughter of the local hotel owner, Hamish tries to solve the case while balancing the none too discreet advances of these women.  Complicating matters is the infighting within the police force and poachers lurking in the background.

After being thoroughly entertained by "Death of a Witch" by M. C. Beaton, I am anxious to read this light, charming series from the beginning.  It is fun to follow a character and watch his development through his cases.  It also is an opportunity for the reader to become an armchair local in the village of Lochdubh, vicariously associating with the residents.
